Bringing IoT to Everyday Living: Building the AbrA Smart Home ExperiencE

At a key inflection point for Fell Tech, I was brought in to support the development and execution of Abra, the company’s first smart home offering and a strategic expansion beyond its roots in marine safety technology. Partnering closely with cross-functional teams across product, engineering, and design, I helped translate the complexity of an IoT ecosystem spanning connected devices, energy data, and intelligent automation into clear requirements and executable workflows, laying the foundation for a cohesive, scalable platform that broadened Fell Tech’s product portfolio into the smart home market.

Abra is a Norway-based smart home system that connects safety, energy, and everyday home devices into one intuitive experience, allowing homeowners to manage everything from door locks and alarms to lighting, climate control, and EV charging in a single app.

overview

One of my favorite projects was working with the Norway-based Fell Tech team to support the development and validation of Abra, an integrated IoT-powered smart home platform designed to bring safety, energy management, and everyday comfort into a single, user-friendly experience. Abra connects a mobile app with embedded devices throughout the home, allowing users to monitor and control systems such as fire and leak protection, heating and water, access control, lighting, appliances, and electric vehicle charging.

The core challenge of this project was balancing a simple, intuitive experience for end users with the underlying complexity of connected hardware, energy data, and intelligent automation. My work focused on ensuring these systems came together seamlessly, delivering a cohesive and reliable experience.

This included:

  • Leading sprint ceremonies for a blended international team spanning development, design, hardware, and QA to ensure alignment, velocity, and clear ownership across workstreams

  • Validating product requirements, design specifications, and user flows, and translating them into clear, actionable user stories for cross-functional teams

  • Supporting the design, development, and validation of the Abra mobile app, built with Flutter as a multi-platform framework across mobile, embedded, and connected home devices

  • Leading UAT and QA efforts to validate end-to-end system behavior across safety, energy management, heating, access control, and EV charging use cases

  • Proactively managing risk, dependencies, and overlapping blockers across teams and partners, while identifying and resolving process bottlenecks to improve cross-team delivery

This initiative was pivotal in expanding Fell Tech’s product portfolio beyond its marine roots and marked a significant step into the smart home market. The result was a unified platform that made advanced safety and energy capabilities accessible through a single, intuitive experience. By bringing IoT technology into everyday use across connected devices and systems throughout the home, Abra established a strong foundation for long-term adoption and supported Fell Tech’s expansion into broader safety, energy, and connected living domains.
