Streamlining Asset Operations: Enterprise Content MANAGEMENT at Kohl’S

At Kohl’s, I worked as a Business Analyst and Product Owner on an enterprise initiative to unify asset management, metadata, and content deployment to web. Supporting hundreds of users across merchandising, marketing, and eCommerce, the organization relied on fragmented tools and largely manual, paper-based workflows that limited scalability and efficiency.

overview

My primary focus was partnering closely with business users to understand workflows, gather requirements, and lead an offshore development team building a customized content management application on Censhare. The platform was designed to support approximately 1,000 business users across more than 20 departments and three major organizations—Merchandising, Marketing, and eCommerce—centralizing content operations, simplifying complex processes, and enabling faster, more consistent execution across channels.

Operating at the intersection of business and technology, I translated highly complex, cross-departmental needs into clear product requirements and intuitive user experiences. This work required deep process analysis, hands-on collaboration on UI design, and close partnership with engineering and system analysts to ensure the solution was scalable, usable, and aligned with real-world workflows.

My work included:

  • Gathering and validating requirements for a customized Censhare-based content management application supporting ~1,000 business users across 20+ departments

  • Acting as Product Owner while managing the product backlog, defining user stories, and leading Agile/ScrumXP ceremonies using JIRA

  • Analyzing and resolving complex business process challenges and realigning strategies and workflows across merchandising, marketing, and eCommerce teams

  • Designing UX interfaces in collaboration with system analysts to streamline content creation, approval, and publishing workflows

  • Serving as a subject matter expert for business users, leading user acceptance testing (UAT), product demos, and training sessions for 500+ users impacted by new functionality

From the team

  • — Judy Gilbert, Senior Information Technology Manager @ Kohl’s Department Stores

“Megan was a Product Owner / Business Analyst on my Program for about a year. She is a fast learner, willing to go above and beyond, builds extremely strong business and IT relationships, takes feedback well, delivers high quality results on time, personable, brings high energy and fun to the team and knows when to escalate.

The Program we worked on was an enterprise content management system with about 1,000 users and crossing over 20 different departments and 3 large organizations - Merchandising, Marketing & eCom. Megan transversed well across all organizations, digging into the details, finding the intricacies and complexities and articulating all angles back to the development team. I could always count on Megan to understand the details and to propose potential solutions and ideas back to the broader Product Owner and Development teams.

I would hire her back on any team I am leading.”

  • — Drew Faber, Software Engineering Manager @ Kohl’s Department Stores

“I had the opportunity to work with Megan during our time at Kohl’s early in her career. From the beginning, she demonstrated a strong eagerness to learn and the confidence to take on responsibilities beyond her direct experience. Megan is a highly versatile professional, with the ability to adapt quickly and excel in any challenge she faces. She also possesses a natural talent for fostering collaboration and bringing people together. Even after all these years, she remains top of mind as someone I would be eager to have on my team if the opportunity arose.”

  • — Justin Elkins, Senior Manager - Digital Operations Process & Innovation @ Kohl’s Department Stores

"I was lead business stakeholder for our company’s enterprise content management system representing the digital operations of the project. Megan was a Product Owner / Business Analyst on the program. Megan is the type of person in IT that you want to have representing your project to be able to ask the right questions to the business and be able to explain the details to the development team.

She is able to balance the IT and business side of a project, with a strong sense of doing what’s right for the company, looking at the “big picture.” She has the ability to not only understand the business needs, but also understands the capabilities that IT can deliver.

She is detailed oriented, solution driven, and always willing to go above and beyond, with an approachable, positive attitude. Her skill set, ability to build relationships, and being able to collaborate on a project is the type of person any business stakeholder wants to have leading IT on a project.

She would be a great addition to any IT team."

The initiative delivered a centralized, scalable content management platform that significantly improved how teams across Kohl’s created, organized, and governed digital assets. By standardizing metadata, simplifying workflows, and aligning tools to real business processes, the work reduced operational friction, improved adoption across departments, and established a strong foundation for enterprise asset management and content operations at scale.
